“When I came here I thought it was going to be (one of) those usual workshops where… they just tell you ‘do this’ …but when I actually came here, my vision changed because….not only did they define what success is but they taught us the steps on how to get success.” – Abdi Adow, “Roadmap for Success” Participant

On Saturday, March 20, nearly 100 underprivileged Grade 7-12 Regent Park students were exposed to the college, university and corporate worlds at “Roadmap for Success”, an event organized by the INROADS Toronto Alumni Association (IAA) and hosted by the Yonge Street Mission.

The IAA organized a full-day event that began with an inspiring speech by IAA member Ricky Neckles, President of Neckles Global Enterprises and concluded with an extraordinary performance by Daniel Daley. Daniel not only performed several songs routinely heard on radio stations such as Toronto’s 93.5 Flow FM, but premiered new songs at the event. The IAA was proud to supply the rest: a busy schedule incorporating the True Colours and Achieving Dream Workshops facilitated by Cecile Peterkin, a career panel, two snack breaks and a multi-course lunch prepared by Chef Junior Charles.

The effects on the students were profound. Students met new friends, engaged with presenters, posed difficult questions to workshop leaders and began to form the beginnings of life-long mentorship relationships with INROADS Alumni. While filming, a television cameraman from CTV remarked on the truly inspiring level of passion and engagement and the impact that this event ‘would clearly have’ on the Regent Park community.

IAA members and our Yonge Street Mission partners turned out in force: they greeted and registered students, helped to serve lunch, spoke passionately, ran workshops and cleaned up after the event. Over 25 from the 1999 to 2009 intern classes showed up and many remained long after the last students left the Yonge Street Mission to reconnect.

This 2010 edition of “Roadmap for Success” has elevated the IAA’s commitment to the Toronto community. Hundreds of thousands learnt of the event during CTV’s coverage that evening. “Roadmap for Success’ sponsors contributed an unprecedented $15,000 and a list of prizes including a signed Toronto Raptors jersey and basketball, two Raptors tickets worth $400, two Premium ‘in the action’ Blue Jays tickets and an iPod. These not only ensured a memorable experience for the students, but created a receptive audience within the Regent Park community for future IAA events.

This was undoubtedly one of the brightest moments for the IAA and INROADS Toronto. We look forward to many more.

The IAA would like to thank Jasmi Shah and Chivon John for their leadership in organizing and planning this year’s “Roadmap for Success” event. The IAA also extends its thanks to its event partner Jeff Kariuki at Yonge Street Mission and sponsors: FirstService Corporation, IBM, Kraft, Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment, McCain Foods Canada, NEXT Financial Group, TELUS, the Yonge Street Mission and the INROADS Toronto Alumni Association Family and Friends.

On Monday April 6th, the IAA hosted its first Community Outreach event with the Yonge Street Mission for high potential youth in the organization’s Leaders in Training (LIT) Program. The event consisted of a panel discussion of INROADS alumni who generously volunteered their time to share information about career backgrounds and answer questions from the youth in attendance about post-secondary education and planning their careers. Our alumni included Shane Heywood, Anton Katipunan, Thi Khuat, Joanne St. Bernard and Konata Lake.

The event was a great success and received positive feedback from the Yonge Street Mission Youth program directors and alumni in attendance. The IAA would like to extend our sincere appreciation to the alumni that volunteered their time and contributing to our successful launch of our Community Relations portfolio.

We look forward to hosting future community events and providing additional opportunities for our alumni to give back to the community.

On January 15, over one hundred senior managers from leading firms in finance, accounting, marketing, insurance, and technology gathered at Procter & Gamble’s Canadian headquarters for a corporate breakfast. This year’s featured speaker was Tim Penner, President of Procter & Gamble Canada. He spoke persuasively on “How to Maximize the Return on Your Diversity Investment.” Other notable attendees included Margaret Best (Minister of Health Promotion; Member of Provincial Parliament—Scarborough Guildwood), Pauline Christian (1st Vice-President of the Black Business and Professional Association) and Wilson Martinez del Rio (INROADS Vice President of International & Strategic Initiatives) who presented Richard with a plaque commemorating his five years of contributions to INROADS

All attendees were impressed with Tim Penner’s presentation and the advanced techniques that P&G
employ not only to foster a diverse and inclusive atmosphere, but to ensure that this atmosphere is
harnessed to generate competitive results.
